GOODY TWO SHOES: The Definition Of Chutzpah: Part IV

Despite the Postville City Council's declaration of the town as a humanitarian and economic disaster area, the IA Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division is not exactly rushing to the town’s aid,
reports The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, IA). Disaster declarations are based on natural emergencies, "so I don't know how that would qualify," a spokesperson told the paper. So what’s the “disaster?” Rev. Steve Brackett, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville explains: “A raid executed by a U.S. government entity caused collateral damage that the people of northeast Iowa are having to deal with without any help from those who caused the damage.”

The “raid” refers to the May 12th immigration raid at kosher meatpacker Agriprocessors Inc. (last item)during which the company was discovered to have several hundred forged documented aliens working at below minimum wage, some of whom were minors operating dangerous equipment. The “damage” refers to repatriating the aliens who will not be needed to give testimony in several criminal cases pending against the company’s former CEO Sholom Rubashkin for wage and labor laws, as well as indictments against Rubashkin and other employees for violations of labor and safety laws and regulations, document forgery laws and bank fraud.

At this juncture, it is unknown the extent to which Rev. Brackett, the Pottsville mayor and the city council looked the other way while Rubashkin operated as though he were above the law – and perhaps even aided and abetted his criminal enterprise, and The Stiletto hopes federal prosecutors explore their culpability. It seems the whole town was in on the action one way or the other.
