According to one survey done in Anchorage around 1980, the average age of self-identification was 12. The average age at which that person told another living soul was 18. People talk about putting a library book on homosexuality open before the seat next to theirs so people would not think they were interested in that sort of thing. I can't see people choosing to suffer the discrimination and social outcasting that gay people suffered once- and still do in some circles. In general: I do not dispute Nixon's statement that she chose her gayhood.
Not that that should matter. By definition you choose your faith. Anyone who believes people ought to be forced to change behaviors primally important to them that harm no one (except maybe theologically) should try being a Christian in Riyadh.

Comment on A current events round-up for conservatives

The first question that leaps to mind is "How willing are those workers?" You could get that kind of dedication in the US. By paying overtime and bonuses and such. Slave labor is always cheaper but do we really want cheap at that price?

Second: the liberal bias at WaPo is a bias of perception. A giant pro-life march held in April some years ago instead of January was not covered by the Post because it did not occur to them to civer it- as they admitted. The bad thing is that this bias is hard to overcome. How can you combat something you cannot perceive?

Comment on What it’s like to wait 77 years to reunite with daughter given up for adoption

Actually, I think this is a case where the hard core pro-life movement compromises, knowing that pregnancy from rape is extremely rare. Rape is the one situation where a mother is not in any way complicit in the conception of the baby she is carrying. Therefore, the people who don't approve of avoiding the consequences of what you got yourself into will want a right to abort a baby conceived in a rape. So we cut a deal to get their votes to make almost all abortion illegal.

What I have heard at Right to Life conventions is that the woman who gets an abortion after being raped usually would be better off delivering the baby. This makes sense to me because these women are probably people who would not abort for any other reason, so are going to feel bad about it. So I can't say that we agree with NARAL. As far as I am concerned, there does not exist a spoon long enough to sup with those people. (Caveat: I have been in organized Right to Life for many years but I can't speak for anyone but me.)

Thank you for passing along this story. It is an honest-to-God miracle.

Comment on The deer hunter

One thing. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. It does not say which ones. It covers George Washington's sword and pistol as well as the average soldier's flintlock. And it covers the guns people carry today.

Also, if you are going to hunt the primative way, why not use a bow and arrow? Or a spear? Or drive the animal over a cliff the way they used to back in primitive times? I do not hunt (though I eat meat) but if I hunted with anything but a camera my explicit intent would be to kill the animal as humanely as possible. Meaning that if I miss the killing shot, I can make a second attempt immediately. The last thing I would want is a notoriously balky and inaccurate gun.

Finally, a hunter with his high powered rifle and scope and special- purpose ammunition is just as dedicated to the one-shot kill as is this man.

Comment on After man shoots roommate while trying to kill a mouse, police discover a big rat

"Find a big rat". Here's to the rat's upcoming marriage to the prisoner with the most cigarettes.

Comment on A current events round-up for conservatives

So pastor Nadarkhani was judged an apostate by the Iranian court because he has "Muslim ancestry." Assuming the Iranian court meant that as true - not a good assumption when dealing with Iran - I guess President Obama should not go anywhere near Iran. It would be awkward to see the President on trial for apostasy.

Comment on A current events round-up for conservatives

I agree withthe stiletto about whether Chaz can say he had a birth defect. All he meant was he had a problem that needed surgical correction, not that he, himself, was defective in any way.

And the teachers and teacher's aide who mistreated their students are beneath contempt. If I found one of them floating in my swimming pool, I would punish my dog.

Comment on A current events round-up for conservatives

Thank you for this on Cain. I had seen it on Fox last night but no-one gave specifics. Geraldo Rivera asked a main Cain staffer (I forget who) if Cain had paid hush money to these women, yes or no, and the guy obviously ducked the question. But that's a "Have you stopped beating your wife?" question. Politico has put some solid research into their article (unlike the NYT on McCain's alleged affair) but if they have seen documentation, I wish they would have included a synopsis.

Two things. Sometimes they do just throw money at someone to save time. My daughter was injured in a traffic accident. The insurance company paid her doctor bill and offered her $2500 to sign a settlement. We had not asked for anything. She missed two days of work is all. They just threw money.

Second, some people's humor is ... "earthier" than other people's. We (I did say "we") may try to be sure of our audience but we don't always succeed. My current manager has given me a few >Gak! Did she just do that?!< moments but she would be instantly contrite were someone to take offense. And Cain may be the same. And it may be a cultural thing. He is Southern and Black. I would have to see more. That this was in the 90's I will take as a good sign. With Clinton, if you may recall, it was continual.

Comment on A current events round-up for conservatives

Communism by its very nature is totalitarian. One wonders what he says in private. Safoorah Khan was out of line: the district should not have settled. A Muslim is enjoined to make pilgrimage at least once in their life. They are not required to make it at any specific time of year or in any particular year. It's not like the school was forcing her to eat lunch with the kids during Ramadan or something.

</rdf:RDF>
